This sympathetic guy works in the Sapiranga Natural Park just outside Praia do Forte, north of Salvador de Bahia as a guide and was able to tell us a great deal about the reserve. he showed us many fruits, insects, parrots, monkeys, bugs, flowers and trees and explained to us what made them unique to the area

Sapiranga forest is the only Primary forest along the Brazilian coast meaning that it is a preserved forest unchanged by Man unlike most of the forest on the Earth. Most of the Amazonian forest has stayed the same for thousands years, but it is almost impossible to find such preserved ecosystem along the coast since it is of such an easy access. However thanks to the work of the Garcia d’Avila foundation, which dedicated funds to educate local people and set up a long-term program aiming at preserving the wild life and the forest, the Sapiranga is a wonderful example of Primary forest.
